Top Places to Eat in Belfast

Shed Bistro, Ormeau Road, Belfast

Shed Bistro opened its doors in 2012 and since then has been our “go to” eatery on the Ormeau Road. It was taken over in 2018 by the amazing husband and wife team of Jonny and Christina Taylor, and in 2019 the restaurant won two prestigious awards-Bistro of the Year for Northern Ireland in the NI Food Awards and Casual Dining of the Year in Co Antrim in the NI Hospitality Awards.

We began our evening with some terrific cocktails, and we were looking forward to an evening of top-notch food. We weren’t disappointed.
The starters included Pan Roasted Scallops with Cucumber Ketchup, Lime Mayo, & a Squid Ink Tuile,  Sticky Beef Salad with Sweet Chilli & Ginger, Sesame Crusted Tuna Loin with Pickled Ginger, Asian Slaw, & Yuzu Mayo, and Rabbit Rillettes with Apricot Jam, Sourdough & Pistachios.

The main courses were even more delicious, and it was almost impossible to choose a favourite dish. The Pan-Roasted Plaice was served on the bone with Greens and a Saffron Velouté,  the Shellfish Risotto had King Prawns, Scallops, & a variety of Fresh Shellfish, and the Manor Farm Corn-Fed Chicken was moist and succulent with Dauphinoise Potatoes & Pepper Sauce, accompanied by the most wonderfully crispy Polenta Chips.

To finish, we were so bowled over by the intriguing “Cheese Menu”, featuring both local and continental cheeses, that we couldn’t resist ordering the complete selection to share, and the Pineapple Carpaccio with Coconut Jelly, Rum Syrup, and Raspberry Sorbet was a refreshing palate cleanser. We also enjoyed the tangy Lemon Tart with Raspberry & Crème Fraiche.

Olivers at Knock, Ballyhackamore, Belfast

We always have a terrific meal when we dine at either ‘The Restaurant’ or ‘The Garden’ at Oliver’s, and our most recent visit confirmed that the quality of the food, drinks and service was still as high as ever, and it’s also great value for money.

We started with Charred Aubergine with Falafel Crumb, Salt & Chilli Squid, and Oliver’s exceptionally good Fried Prawn Tacos which is a generously portioned starter: plenty for two to share.

Our main courses were an unctuous Roast Cauliflower Risotto, perfectly Pan-Fried Hake with a delicious battered pickle on top-a subtle nod to a traditional fish supper, a Sirloin Steak with Peppercorn Cream, and a spicy Chicken Katsu Burger.

We decided to forego dessert in favour of the indulgently boozy Espresso Martinis and Sam’s Cheese Box – a cleverly packaged cheeseboard selection complete with oatcakes and Oliver’s Chutney.

Oliver’s At Knock has just launched a brand new menu, so be sure to check it out. We can’t wait to try it.

We loved the authentically baked Almond and Chocolate Biscotti-just perfect for dunking in a cup of strong Espresso, and the Brinjal Pickle, which made a spicy accompaniment to vegetable pakora and samosas.
