Top Places to Eat in Belfast

Sage, Lisburn Road

We had really enjoyed the three-course lunch experience at Sage on the Lisburn Road, organised by Vegan Belfast Guide and were keen to sample the regular a la carte menu. Sage offers relaxed surroundings, knowledgeable, friendly service, and terrific, wholesome vegan fare.

We chose a selection of starters to share tapas-style. Both the Cauliflower and Garlic Tofu bites were crispy and had a great chilli kick, and the Temple Cajon goujons had a surprisingly meaty taste and texture.

We thought the Beyond Meat burger, served with all the trimmings, was flavoursome and satisfying, and the in-house garlic mayonnaise was creamy and delicious! Next time, we must try Ash’s homemade “Beef-Outside” burger which came highly recommended.

And to finish, we had the decadent caramel, coconut and chocolate ganache tart, and the “lively lemon” tart which was light, tangy and refreshing.

No.14 at The Georgian House – Comber

We’ve always experienced fantastic food and drink at No 14 at The Georgian House, but this al fresco lunch was absolutely outstanding. From start to finish, the quality of the food, service and surroundings was second to none.

To begin with, the crispy stuffed courgette flowers with the creamy tang of St Tola’s Goats Cheese were delicious, fried in a light batter and served with local beetroot.

The special of pan-fried Turbot was a perfectly cooked fillet of fish with a tempura oyster, pickled walnuts, and a dulse chutney, all beautifully presented and accompanied by local vegetables and buttery Comber potatoes.

The dessert selection was so tempting that we had to order one of each to share; a dark chocolate tart with hazelnut praline, a strawberry cheesecake with an incredible toffee macaroon, lemon tart with scorched marshmallow, and a creme brûlée with mulled apricots. Divine!

And to drink, we quaffed a berry-rich Puglian Primitivo, a wonderful Albariño guest wine, and some stunning Shortcross gin cocktails-the violet “Classic Aviation” was a cool combination of floral and citrus notes.

Thanks to Jim and all the team for a terrific lunchtime treat in the late summer sunshine.

Product of the Week

Nourish Good Food artisan plant-based cultured cheese

This amazing locally produced cheese selection, available to buy at Nature’s Way, is startlingly good.

Many vegan “cheeses” are flabby, bland and tasteless, but this product is a terrific alternative to dairy-based cheese. We tried the “Cashew Blue” infused with spirulina, “24-Karat”: a cheddar-style cheese with turmeric and chives, and “Blackheart” inspired by Morbier and infused with smoke and activated charcoal, and we thoroughly enjoyed them all.

We also bought the “Barbarella” mozzarella with which we intend to make a Vegan Margherita Pizza.
