Top Places to Eat in Northern Ireland
Eighty-One Holywood
This is one of our favourite spots in Holywood for coffee, breakfast or lunch, & when we dropped in for a bite to eat with friends, as always, we appreciated the warm welcome & great food. From the huge vegetarian cooked breakfast to the prettily plated goats cheese, tomato, & pesto quiche, all the dishes were very tasty indeed. And if you fancy indulging in a little glass of wine with your lunch, Eighty-One is fully licensed. We heard a whisper that exciting plans are afoot, both with the menu & the café interior, & we can’t wait to see what the “revamped” Eighty-One has to offer in the very near future.
A Peculiar Tea
From the moment we entered the restaurant, we knew we were in for an evening of playful, foodie fun & inventive, imaginative dishes. Everything about the experience, from the quirky interior with its plethora of nostalgic literary references, to the joyously colourful menu, transported us to a wonderland of Roald Dahl-inspired culinary treats. The six-course tasting menu included Mushroom, Chocolate, Crab, Chicken, Peach & Pea, and although we’ll not go into detail (surprise is all part of the fun) we each had a different favourite dish-which suggests how consistently good the menu is. This fabulously fantastical feast is being served until March 2nd. You’d be mad to miss it. It’s simply “Scrumdiddlyumptious”!
Shout of the Week
Habanero Steve’s
A family-owned producer of hot sauce and chilli-based preserves from Bangor, Habanero Steve’s make all their products in small batches containing real chillies, ensuring a unique depth of both flavour & heat.
We tried their best selling hot sauce, “Venom”, a smoky blend of 4 super hot chillies on a blueberry base, & their “Smoking’ Chipotle Relish” made with bell peppers & smoky Chipotle chillies, which went extremely well with cheese or mixed with mayo or cream cheese for a delicious dip
